Details:
Silymarin, isolated from Silybum marianum L. Gaertn (milk thistle), is a mixture of mainly three flavonolignans, I. E., silybin, silydianin, and silychristin, among which silybin is the most active component. Historically, milk thistle was used medicinally to treat disorders of the liver,
Spleen, and gallbladder. Well known as a hepatoprotector, silymarin was found effective clinically to treat a variety of liver disorders, including acute and chronic viral hepatitis, toxin- and drug-induced hepatitis and cirrhosis, and alcoholic liver disease. It was also found effective in treating certain cancers, such as breast, prostate, and skin cancers. Mechanisms of silymarin action include: Stabilization of hepatocytes by inhibition of hepatotoxin binding to receptor sites on hepatocyte membranes; Reduction of glutathione oxidation to increase glutathione levels in the liver and intestines; Antioxidant activity; Stimulation of ribosomal RNA polymerase and subsequent protein synthesis, leading to enhanced hepatocyte regeneration.
