Also known as the Chinese scholars' tree, Sophora japonica comes from China and Korea and, in many ways, resembles the false acacia, Robinia pseudoacacia. It grows fairly slowly to make a large rounded tree with an open structure of twisting branches, from which young shoots grow straight up. The pale leaves can reach 30cm (12in) long, and are made up of numerous pairs of leaflets, giving the foliage an overall elegant and airy character. These appear late, often only in June. Large clusters of pea-shaped flowers are borne on trees over 30 years old, and make a fine display in late summer and early autumn.
