Product Description
Float Glass is a sheet of glass made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten metal, typically tin, although lead and various low melting point alloys were used in the past. This method gives the sheet uniform thickness and very flat surfaces.
The ingredients for making it are typically about 73 percent silica (essentially sand), soda ash (about 13 percent) and limestone (around nine percent). Soda ash is produced worldwide in huge amounts, and limestone and silica are abundant quarry products. These elements are weighed and mixed into batches, together with recycled glass, known as "cullet, " which accounts for anywhere from 15 to 30 percent of the mixture. The ingredients are melted together at high temperature, which uses a significant amount of fossil fuel energy. The cullet content reduces the amount of energy needed, thus qualifying as a green measure.
