It is in the late 1990s that the potassium formate was used abroad in well drilling & completion fluid especially in the high density well drilling & completion fluid system. And it achieved very good effect.
The using of potassium formate in drilling fluid system makes it have such outstanding qualities as strong inhibition, good compatibility, environment and oil layer protecting ability.

The result of site using indicates that the potassium formate can strongly inhibit the clay from hydrating, dispersing and swelling. The returning drilled cuttings seem like miniballs which appear dry inside. The drilling fluid will not paste the shaker and will not let the mud escape. It has such characters as strong inhibition, good ability of filtration, good lubricating, high penetration speed, low cost and obvious economic benefits.

The using of potassium formate mud is beneficial to improve the stability of the polymer, stabilize the shale and decrease the damage to the rock stratum, as a result, it can ensure the well drilling, completion and workover be in the best working state.

It is mainly used in making priming liquid of aqueous oil well. It is available in high density, and can keep low viscosity, improve the speed of drilling and prolong the service life of the bit. It is a kind of material of high quality in oil exploiting technology area.
