Cubic boron nitride (CBN) is cubic boron nitride (CBN) powder and binder under high temperature and high pressure sintering of poly crystal, mainly bonded with metal type (Co, Ni) and ceramic (such as TiC, TiN, Al2O3) two categories. The structure of cubic boron nitride (CBN) is similar to that of diamond. It has the same type of chemical bonds and similar lattice constants, so it has the hardness and strength similar to that of diamond. The hardness of cubic boron nitride is lower than that of diamond. The microhardness of CBN is 8000 ~ 9000HV, and the hardness of cubic boron nitride CBN is generally 3000 ~ 5000HV. In cutting wear resistant materials, its wear resistance is 50 times of cemented carbide cutting tools, 30 times of coated carbide tools and 25 times of ceramic cutting tools. Because CBN has good resistance to chemical corrosion, and at high temperature showed good thermal stability and hardness, so the relatively high temperature of the tool tip will not have any adverse effect on it, but instead in cutting hardened steel and carbide materials to accelerate the cutting effect.
PCD/CBN tools have higher impact strength and breaking resistance than ceramic knives. They are usually used to process ferrous metals, such as cast iron and hardened steel. In addition, some special PCD/CBN cutters can withstand high power roughing cutting load, intermittent cutting impact, and abrasion and cutting heat during finishing. In recent years, along with the CNC (computer numerical control) processing technology's rapid development and widespread use of CNC machine tools, the application of CBN tool can achieve high efficiency, high stability, long service life and processing are also increasingly popular, also introduced many advanced machining concept, such as high speed cuttinghard machining by turning instead of grinding dry cutting.
