About this painting
In 1873 Monet goes to Argenteuil, a small village on the Seine just outside of Paris. In this painting he reveals the spontaneous and freshness of his artistic talent. His models are his wife, Camille, and their son Jean, both of whom he presents twice, almost completely immersed in the vast field of poppies. THe features of their faces are not defined and seem confused, not unlike the flowers, which exist as little more than reddish smudges. The center of the composition is the house in the background, surrounded by the dark green shapes of trees and dominated by white clouds crossing a blue sky.
