These large and gorgeous baroque freshwater mabe pearls are true pearls in every respect.They are formed inside the oyster and attached to the shell.Many have to be cut or pried off the shell;Some fall off easily during the second, or last, harvest of the freshwater oyster.

Mabes are almost always baroque in shape...Which simply means they have no particular shape.They are some of the most lovely examples of what nature does best.Mabe pearls are left inside the oyster during the first harvest of normal, non-attached pearls, when the oyster is about 4 years old.If they tried to remove them at that point the oyster would surely die.Mabes are always left to continue to grow for another 3 to 5 years until the second harvest occurs.During the second harvest the oyster is ripped open and all pearls, including mabe pearls, are harvested and the shell is then used to make gorgeous mother of pearl beads.

Mabe pearls therefore take 7 to 10 years to form and that accounts for their large size!No one could copy the uniqueness and shapes on these beautiful strands of mabe pearls.
