Info of Silicon Metal

The most common method of silicon metal production is through a metallurgical process. This process begins with a lump of quartz of medium to low purity mixed with carbon, which then goes through several cleaning steps to be processed into higher grades. This silicon metal can then be used for silicon crystals, which are sliced and used as wafers for the semiconductor and solar industry.

For silicon metal to be used in solar and semiconductor applications it must be extremely pure. For solar applications, the metal must be 99.9999% Si, while sem-icon applications require 99.999999999% purity. No quartz product can be purified above 99.999% SiO2, which means silicon metal must go through successive purification processes before it can be used.

Application

Applications of Silicon Metal

There are two main applications for Silicon metal:

As an alloying element for Aluminum alloys for casting and extrusions;
As the basic raw material for Silicones produced by the chemical industry;

These two applications have more or less the same consumption volume and represent more than 90% of total world silicon metal consumption, although most of the chemical application is found in highly industrialized countries; The remaining part of consumption is shared between ultra-high-purity electronic applications and, more recently, solar applications. The other uses remain-marginal.

Silicon metal is also used in the production of super high purity silicon by metallurgical or chemical routes, destined to the manufacture of parts for the segment of advanced electronics, as computers, space communications, defence systems, photo-voltaic panels, etc.

Depending on the application, there are several grades of Silicon metal, which differing levels of various impurities.
