Properties:

Bleaching powder is a white amorphous powdered solid, having an intensive smell. It is chemically unstable, very sensitive to outside influence, and easily dissociates and loses its effect. In the presence of certain organic matters it is liable to cause inflammation at even under a tem perature below 100 Celsius degrees. The oxideising power of bleaching powder can make most of the organic color matters to fade in clolor or be bleached white.

Uses:

1. It is used to bleach wood (paper)pulp, silk, cotton cloth, and other fibres.

2. It is used for sterilising water and as a disinfectant.

3. It is used in the refinement of acetylene, petroleum, etc.
