YVR is awash with Canadian flags as family, friends and fans welcome back some of Canada's athletes from the Beijing Olympics. Krista Guloien, an Olympic rower from Vancouver, was the second athlete to come down the escalator, and says she didn't expect such a huge turnout, even though her family tried to warn her. "They prepped me by text, but I figured there'd be one camera, and some media. I had no idea there'd be this many people. It's really cool. I hope every athlete gets this kind of hometown welcome. "
Today's homecoming for the first wave of returnees to Vancouver was delayed due to weather problems in Asia. A typhoon hitting parts of China over the weekend delayed the flight for a few hours for nearly 100 athletes coming through YVR. Other athletes on the Air Canada flight included several members of the men's gold medal winning rowing team (eights), along with Simon Whitfield, silver medalist in the triathalon. Meanwhile, a new poll says the 18 medals taken home by Canadians in Beijing is considered a success by most Canadians. The poll shows 79% of Canadians surveyed are either satisfied or very satisfied with Canada's performance at the Olympics.
