1: how far can the device be from the speaker and still work while connected by bluetooth? 

a: the max range is of bluetooth connectivity on this speaker is the standard of 30FT. 

2: how waterproof is it? if I had it out in the rain would it be fine if it got covered with raindrops? 

a: it can be submerged in water. I have repeatedly dropped in our hot tub. rain will have no affect as long as you close the flap that covers the charging port. 

3. how's the volume? is it loud enough to bring to the beach or use on a boat? could I hear it loud and clear from 15-20 feet away outdoors? 

a: yes, it is pretty amazing. we have to turn it way down sitting next to it and trying to talk. we have use it on our deck during a party and the volume work well. 
4. is the volume level of the speaker synchronized with the connected device or is it independent?
