Magnesia Alumina Spinel bricks

Introduction:

Magnesia alumina spinel brick (also called Magnesia Aluminate Brick) is a high-grade basic refractory with periclase and spinel as the main raw minerals. Magnesium aluminate spinel is synthesized by the solid oxide reaction route at 1400ºC and then compressed by high-pressure molding and high-temperature sintering. The materials finally form the stable spinel phase MgO·Al₂O₃ (MgAl₂O₄). At the same time, a special mineralizer is added to directly combine the crystal phase particles of the products. Magnesium aluminate spinels offer a desirable combination of mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties both at ambient and elevated temperatures.
Magnesium aluminate spinel offers a unique combination of high-temperature properties, including a high melting point, excellent resistance against chemical attack, potentially high strength even at high temperatures, and very good thermal characteristics. These properties make magnesium aluminate a superior class of refractory material.
Magnesia alumina spinel brick has the characteristics of high strength, good thermal shock stability, and strong resistance to chemical erosion. It is mainly used in the upper and lower transition zone of cement rotary kilns and thermal kiln equipment requiring high-temperature resistance and heat shock resistance.
Magnesium aluminate spinel, as refractory periclase spinel bodies, have a two to three times longer life than magnesia-chrome bricks in rotary kilns.
The fine crystalline spinel in magnesia spinel bricks reacts with CaO from the cement, forming low-melting phases and bonding with good adherence, making it appropriate for areas required for coating formation.
As industries are now aware of the health hazards of chrome-containing refractories, magnesium-aluminate spinel-containing bricks are becoming the only option for chrome-free lining in cement rotary kilns.
In the steel industry, spinel increases the eutectic temperature and the formation of a dense sub-molten layer on the working face, which increases the resistance of the lining. Steel ladles require refractories that can withstand high-temperature corrosion, mechanical wear, and thermal shock, which are the characteristics of magnesium aluminate spinel. As a result, the spinel-containing lining of magnesia alumina spinel refractory brick provides excellent performance and service life.
In the glass industry, magnesium aluminate spinel bricks are used in the middle layers of glass furnace regenerators as they are highly stable against attack by SO₃ and alkali sulfates. Spinel bricks with different binders and additives can remarkably resist NaHSO₄ and SO₂ in the presence of a flame. The highest corrosion resistance against alkali sulfate attack between 700 °C and 1,100 °C was reported for fused spinel brick with spinel bonding. The spinel brick is superior to unburnt magnesia-chrome bricks, offering cost reduction and energy conservation.
Magnesium aluminate spinel is also important for many other critical refractory applications. Magnesium aluminate, in comparison to magnesia-magnesium aluminate, has a lower rate of wear and provides longer life in converters of copper smelting plants.
