Working Principle of LVDT Displacement Sensor

1. Core Structure

LVDT consists of:

• : Centrally located, generates an alternating magnetic field when energized by AC excitation.
• : Symmetrically positioned on both sides of the primary coil, connected in series opposition to form a differential output.
• : Displacement of the core alters the magnetic flux distribution between coils.

2. Null Position

When the core is centered, induced voltages in the secondary coils are equal in magnitude but opposite in phase, resulting in zero differential output (with minor residual voltage).

3. Displacement Sensing

• : When the core moves away from the center, the magnetic flux increases in the closer secondary coil (raising its voltage) and decreases in the farther coil (lowering its voltage).
• : The voltage difference between the secondary coils is linearly proportional to displacement, with polarity (phase) indicating direction.

4. Linearity Range

The core must operate within the designed linear range; exceeding this range introduces nonlinearity between output voltage and displacement.

5. Signal Conditioning

External circuitry is required for stable measurement:

• : The primary coil is typically driven by a 1-10 kHz sinusoidal signal.
• : The differential AC signal from secondary coils is demodulated (e.g., via diodes or synchronous demodulation) into DC voltage, then filtered and amplified.
