History of antique wooden tennis rackets
In the 14th century, the Italians invented the tennis racket. The first tennis rackets appeared in the 16th century and were made using parchment paper. By the 17th century, when tennis was introduced to England, the racquet was no longer flat parchment, but gut.

In 1874, Walter C. Wingfield, an Englishman, made wooden rackets, which were used for the next century.
