Induction heating is an ideal heating method for surface quenching. Due to the influence of proximity effect and skin effect, induction heating is only a layer of the workpiece near the outer skin penetration depth of a fixed value of direct heating, the internal heat is very little. If the heating time is controlled and the heating power is increased, the heat of the direct heating layer can not be transferred to the workpiece, so as to meet the requirements of surface quenching.
The induction coil heats the workpiece surface through a large medium frequency current. The general workpiece heating time is only a few seconds, the total internal temperature is not enough time to rise, and then break point, and quickly spray water to cool the surface of the workpiece. The induction coil is cooled by water through a copper tube, and the coil should be just shaped to cover the workpiece, with as little gap as possible between it and the workpiece.
The depth of quenching layer is an important technological requirement, which has great influence on the quality of products. The depth of quenching layer is mainly determined by the frequency of heating power supply. The higher the frequency, the smaller the penetration depth, and the shallower the direct heating layer and quenching depth. The frequency of quenching heating power supply is divided into medium frequency (2.5 and 8kHz) and high frequency (70-300kz) two categories. The relationship between the medium frequency quenching depth and the frequency of the power supply is the power frequency: the 8kHz quenching layer depth is 1.3-3.5mm, and the 2.5kHz quenching layer depth is 2.4-10mm.
The power of the power supply also has an effect on the depth of quenching layer. The greater the power, the shorter the heating time, the heat of the direct heating layer has no time to spread to the interior. The shallower the quenching layer is. The power required by medium frequency quenching is related to the quenching area, and the power per unit area is generally (0.5-2) kW/cm2.
