Overview of Ram BOP
A ram BOP is a blowout preventer that is samiliar in operation to a gate valve. Ram BOPS use a pair of steel plungers that oppose each other (rams). The rams can extend towards the wellbore's center to restrict the flow of fluids or retract open to permit the flow.
Ram BOP can be used to quickly seal the top of the well in the event of a well control event (kick). A ram BOP consist of two halves of a cover, and the covers are constructed of steel for strength. Pipe Rams are installed into ram BOP, and pipes rams can effectively seal a limited range of pipe diameters. There are variable-bore rams available also, and the variable-bore rams are designed to seal a wider range of pipe diameters. Shear Rams Blocks are used to share drill pipes.
