Straight and elegant, bamboo is regarded as the emblem of moral integrity and known as Four Gentlemen together with plum, orchid and chrysanthemum. Bamboo is a plant remains green all the year round. It grows vigorously with a solid texture. As auspicious Chinese sayings go, bamboo is considered as the symbol of prosperity, wealth and safety. It's also one of the eternal themes of Chinese drawings.
Once upon a time, there was a period that people carved characters on the bamboo slips to keep records. Later, books made of bamboo slips were created to convey cultural information. After the papermaking technique was invented by Cai Lun, bamboo slips were replaced by paper gradually. However, bamboo carving is still loved by people today. The earliest bamboo carvings include carvings with dragon pattern the Western Han Dynasty, carved bamboo brush pots in the Jin Dynasty and carved bamboo cups in the North Zhou Dynasty.
The methods for bamboo carving include round carving, openwork carving, deep carving and surface carving. Our works involves carvings on the following topics: poems, proverbs, square pictures, Chinese knotting, color drawings, foreign languages, hollow-out, surface carving, brush pots and golden lacquer paintings, etc. Materials used in bamboo carvings are carefully selected and treated with boiling water before drying in the air under direct sunshine. The process of bamboo carving has 27 steps, such as utensil making, sketching, carving and peeling. The resulted works are vivid and ingenious in unique and creative forms.
