What Are Sink Marks in Plastic Injection Mold? Sink marks are some kinds of depression on the surface of the plastic part due to the shrinkage of the material underneath. Sink marks most commonly occur on a surface that has ribs, bosses, and other voluminous features on the rear side of the moulding. All plastics shrink as they freeze off, some more than others. One of the things you can do during the design phase is to identify where these injection molding sink marks are going to be and choose a material that doesn’t shrink as much. Or you can even add something to the plastic material like glass fibers or you can put talcum powder in and it will mitigate the shrinkage quite a bit. -
What Is Injection Molding Shrinkage? Injection molding shrinkage simply refers to how much the polymers will contract during the cooling phase. During the injection molding process, molten plastic material is injected into a mold cavity under high pressure, and when the plastic material cools, it shrinks as it solidifies. This shrinkage can cause the molded part to be smaller than the intended size, and have an uneven shape known as war-page.
