Stone Statues

The monument is located at the junction of the British and French concessions and was designed by J.E. March of Messrs. Spence, Robinson&Partners. The cost was borne by both the Ministry of Works and the Board of Directors. The grand completion ceremony was held on February 16, 1924. The monument is a rectangular box shaped building, with a reinforced concrete base and a hollow center. The walls are covered with granite, and the names of the victims are printed on the surface. On both sides, there are ancient war equipment such as bronze helmets, shields, and armor. At the top of the monument stands a bronze goddess of peace, caressing a child with her hand. Later, it was demolished by the invading Japanese army. The picture shows the site of the 1924 monument completion ceremony. Unfortunately, this excellent artwork did not last long and was demolished by the Japanese occupation authorities in 1941.
