In the past 25 years a structural change has taken place at DIEHL Metall- away from mass semi-products towards the production of precision strip of copper alloys for the electronic industry. A precondition for that was a determined investment policy for the creation of a modern production line. Already in 1972 the two principles were established which were the guidelines for all further decisions: Introduction and concentration on the continuous strip casting technology, as well as production in approx. 600 mm width from casting to the finished strip.
Today, our mother company, DIEHL Metall, is one of the world′s most important manufacturers of bronze strip. On seven continuous strip casting plants coil weights of 7 ton of the dimension 16 x 650 mm are produced. After several For the annealing operations the strip is guided through a continuous strip floatation furnace with a protective gas atmosphere or in bell-type furnaces with minimum 25 % hydrogen as a protective gas. Apart from flatness, an important requirement by the punching shop elimination of internal stresses, which may result in distortions when free-punching. Therefore a progressive stretch-leveler equipped with a new type of flatness measuring and controlling device has been installed and is used for all finish-rolled strips.
In a surface treatment line, by combined degreasing, pickling and brushing operations a metallically bright surface is created, which, on request, can be provided with an oxidation protection. Due to our state of the art equipment we are in a position to fulfill the requirements for strip with narrow tolerances and free of stresses that is ideally suited for the punching process and the subsequent galvanic or soldering treatments at the finishing plants. Roughing and annealing operations, the final rolling pass of the strip, approx. 630 mm wide, is carried out on two machines of 20-high roll mill to thickness down to 0.05 mm. The rolling mills, erected in 1997 and 2003, have electronic measuring devices in connection with high-precision, direct hydraulic screw-down and flatness control systems, installed for the first time anywhere in the world. In this system the roll gap is automatically corrected with a very high screw-down speed so that thickness and flatness deviations are virtually excluded.
