Cushions are a very important part of aircraft seating. A well designed seat can be ruined by a poorly planned cushion. There are many aspects to consider in designing one. The four main goals of cushion design nowadays are to maximize comfort and durability while minimizing weight and cost. This is however not always possible as there are many variables involved. The variables that affect these goals include - but are not limited to - hardness (firmness), rake angle, cushion geometry, cushion material, dress cover material, cushion thermal properties, density, seat geometry and Velcro positioning.
