The transformation of Ethernet into a carrier-class access technology is occurring at a rapid pace. Customers are increasingly demanding the cost-effectiveness and flexibility that Ethernet affords. At the same time, they require the deterministic performance, reliability and management capabilities of traditional TDM and ATM services that they have come to rely upon. Much progress has been made to transform Ethernet into a carrier-class technology. When referring to a Carrier Ethernet access, however, must consider different service attributes, network topology and infrastructure, as well as user access requirements. The Ethernet service provider must have a range of manageable product solutions that can deliver various service rates, support multiple physical media and incorporate QoS mechanisms for reducing OPEX, while guaranteeing service level agreements.
Ethernet over TDM or EoPDH is one of many techniques that provided Ethernet connectivity over non-Ethernet networks. Specifically, it is a standardized methodology for transporting native Ethernet frames over the existing telecommunications copper infrastructure by leveraging the established TDM transport technology. It is one of several Ethernet transport technologies that enable Telecommunication Service Providers to offer "Carrier Ethernet" services. Also commonly used as a means of connecting businesses to a Metro Ethernet network.
Ethernet over TDM is based on a collection of technologies and standards that allow telecommunications Carriers to make use of their extensive networks of legacy PDH and SONET/SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) equipment to provide new Ethernet services. In addition, the collection of the standards provide for interoperability and the gradual migration of Carriers to Ethernet networks. The various solutions are available, starting from point-to-point standalone device, central chassis solution, and the brand new point-to-multipoint aggregation-type device.
CONT-E1/FE series will help Carriers and enterprises to make full use of the traditional network in this TCP/IP Era. CONT-E1/FE series are Converter for interconnecting Fast Ethernet (FE) with E1 which are based on the technique of Ethernet-over-TDM, a new breed of products integrating advanced Ethernet bridging with fully channelized TDM capabilities. This series of products are typically situated in a central location, aggregating user LAN traffic received from remote devices, thus completing a full access solution from the service provider central site to the customers' premises. CONT-E1/FE series can connect up to 4 LANs over up-to 16 E1s circuits respectively. This unique capability enables service providers and enterprises to provide transparent Ethernet private line (point-to-point) or Ethernet private LAN (point-to-multipoint) service at granular rates similar to fractional E1. The equipment also supports differentiated services on the VLAN and IP layer with priority queues forwarding per 802.1p and IP Precedence.

The simple error monitor built in the equipment can designate the data channel for receiving and transmission through dial-up or net manger, the indicator light on the panel can indicate the synchronized mode, error rating in the error test (No error, <10 -3 , >10 -3 ), the net manger can record the occurring time and count of errors. BERT needs some supplementary means such as end-to-end E1 loop-back, local E1 inline, etc. |
