The principle of optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR)
An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) tests optical cables by injecting a high-power laser or optical pulse from one end of the cable and receiving the reflected signal through the same side. When the light pulse is transmitted through the cable, some of the scattering and reflection will return to the transmitter. An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) measures only the higher intensity of the reflected light signal. By recording the time it takes from transmission to return and the speed of transmission through the glass, a formula can then be used to calculate the length of the cable.

Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) works indirectly compared with power supplies and electricity meters that can directly measure the loss of optical cable equipment. Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is made according to the backscattering of light and Fresnel reverse principle. It uses the backscattered light generated when the light propagates in the optical fiber to obtain the attenuation information, so as to measure the loss and fault position of the optical fiber indirectly.

The use of optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR)
Before connecting the test pigtail, clean the test pigtail on the test side, insert the pigtail vertical meter test jack, fully connect the raised U-shaped part of the pigtail with the concave U-shaped part of the test jack, and screw properly. Before connecting the optical fiber under test to the OTDR during line repair or cutting, notify the maintenance personnel at the peer office of the trunk section to remove the corresponding connecting pigtail from the optical fiber distribution box to avoid damage to the optical disc.
